Real + Virtual
20 years ago, a my friend brought around Nightmare, the interactive VHS board game. I couldn’t believe how amazing it was. It was part board game, part movie, part Gatekeeper in the room, part terrifying.
I don’t remember much about the game play, but i do remember that there was a countdown and you had to answer the Gatekeeper.
I do remember how much I thought this had changed gaming forever.
This memory was bought back by a video I spotted just now for LEGO.
The app shows you a shape you have to build with LEGO pieces. Then you build and scan the blocks, and it awards points for speed and accuracy.
It works because there is stuff happening in the real world and in virtual world. Exactly the same thing I loved about Nightmare.
With technology like QR codes & NFC here now, playful experiences mashing real and virtual world are easy to make.
It was amazing 20 years ago with VHS, the possibilities today are endless.
